Modern Blocks:
I was on line recently and came across a description of modern quilt blocks @ Craftsy.com
Any traditional block can modernize using the principles of modern quilting: bold color, negative space, use of quilting. Many blocks lend themselves to the modern movement: geometric shapes, stars, paper piecing.
There are also examples of log cabin and string blocks. This month I thought we would explore the use of stars.
We can use traditional star patterns and make them modern with use of color or by construction using off-set points.
Examples:
Lone Star
Fractured Lone Star
Modern Ohio Star
Inverted Star
Ribbon Star

CHALLENGE: DUE AT JUNE MEETING:
Pantone has announced the color of the Year 2018. 18-3838 Ultra Violet.
https://www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year-2018
This year we have been discussing Modern Quilting. Using the color of the year, make a modern piece that is minimum of 12x12” finished. It could be a wall hanging, table runner, quilt block… anything goes. I am going to leave it open to interpretation. I want to see where your imagination takes you. Following the link above to the Pantone site for some inspiration.
Pixel Quilts:
As I have been browsing the internet lately I have been noticing pixel quilts or pixilated quilts.
It is important to think about the scale of the project. You want to make it manageable as well as recognizable. When designing the project you can chose what size you wish to make the pixels. Note that if you do choose to do your project with larger “pixels”, colour becomes even more important.
You want to begin by choose a high contrast image. You want an image that has high contrast between your lights and darks. To better determine your contrast, change a photo to black and white. You want to see multiple shades of grey. If you have too much of the same shades it will not give you the effect you are looking for.
There are many methods in which to lay out your pixel quilt. There is a spreadsheet method taught on Craftsy.
However you can also use graph paper or an Spreadsheet program to design you project.
You can use any basic photo editing program to adjust your colour saturation as well as the tint and temperature. This also can be done on the photo machines at Walmart. If you prefer, you can print a larger copy (8x10 or larger and create a grid pattern right on photo). Using your excel or creating your own colour map you can then break down the colors and amount of units needed. At this point you would begin shopping for fabric.
You do not have to use a photo. You can design your own quilt or block using this same method. Using grid paper design an image or using colour you can create a gradient. Any imagine can become a pixel quilt. You can use as little as two colors or as many as you choose. I have made a small Heart imagine using several colors to show you how you can place your color. You can also take this technique and apply the rules of light etc to create a dark and light side to your image. Remember in doing so your background colour would need to be the same. Light to dark.
